Hawks Compete at OEC Championships

Fullerton, CA - On Friday, April 25th, the Santiago Canyon Track & Field Teams closed out their 2014 regular season by competing in the Orange Empire Conference Championships hosted at Fullerton College.

The Lady Hawks recorded their best conference finish in program history as they placed 3rd in the final Orange Empire Conference standings – defeating their rivals from Fullerton, Golden West, Saddleback, and Santa Ana.  The Lady Hawks were led by a pack of Top-5 individual finishers.  Sophomore sprinter Harneet Bhullar dashed to a 3rd place finish in the 100 Meters.  Sophomore middle distance runner Lindsey Meng placed 3rd in the 1500 Meters and 5th in the 800 Meters.  Freshman sprinter/jumper Kaitlin Gishwiller placed 4th in both the 100 Meters and Triple Jump and 5th in the Long Jump.  Other top performers for the Lady Hawks included Asiria Ramirez in the Steeplechase (4th place), Chloe Santa Maria de Toscano in the High Jump (4th), Erica Embro in the High Jump (5th) and Heptathlon (5th), and Allee Padget in the 400 Meter Dash (5th).

The SCC men's team finished 5th in the final conference standings as they earned victories against Fullerton and Santa Ana.  The Hawks were led by the stellar field event performances of sophomore jumper Divonte Beale.  Beale defended his individual conference title from last year in the Triple Jump by earning the 2014 Orange Empire Conference Title.  Beale was also the Conference Runner-Up in the Men's Long Jump.  Sophomore Ryan Taylor added to the SCC dominance in the jumping events by placing 2nd in the Triple Jump to complete the 1-2 sweep of that event by the Hawks.  The top running performance for the Hawks was recorded in the Men's 4x100 Meter Relay as Divonte Beale, David Rosenbaum, Jordan Davis, and Tyler Halverson combined to produce a new season best time (43.78 seconds) while placing 3rd overall and earning a regional qualifying berth.

All combined, the Hawks men's and women's track & field teams qualified 16 student-athletes for advancement into this week's Southern California Regional Championships meet which is being hosted at Riverside City College.

 Hawks Compete in Fresno

Fresno, CA - On Monday, February 17th, the SCC track & field teams competed at the "Run For The Dream" Indoor Invitational held at Fresno State University.  The women's team was led by Lindsey Meng who ran 2:25.45 to place 3rd overall in the 800 Meters – finishing behind runners from Fresno Pacific University and Cal State Bakersfield.  The top individual performance for the men's team was produced by Jordan Davis who placed 10th overall with a time of 8.69 seconds in the 55 Meter High Hurdles.  The Men's 4x400 Meter Relay Team of Davis, Ryan Figueroa, Sebastian Ramirez, and Alejandro Sanchez took home the meet title as they edged out teams from UC Santa Cruz, La Verne University, and Sacramento City College to win the relay event in a time of 3:44.71.

Hawks Compete at Battle of the Regions

Bakersfield, CA - On Friday, February 14th, the Running Hawks competed against a field of 10 community colleges at the "Battle of the Regions" Invitational hosted by Bakersfield College. 

The Lady Hawks placed 3rd overall in the team scoring.  Kaitlin Gishwiller led the way with a pair of event tiles as she won the Long Jump (15'-11.25") and Triple Jump (33'-1.75").  Other athletes recording Top-5 finishes were Kylie Bentley (100m Hurdles & 400m Hurdles), Lindsey Meng (800 Meters & 1500 Meters), Terra Moore (Steeplechase), Allison Padget (200 Meters & 400 Meters), Kelly Prinzing (Steeplechase), Chloe Santa Maria de Toscano (High Jump), and Angel Silva (100m Hurdles).

The men's team placed 7th overall in the team scoring.  Ryan Taylor led the way for the Hawks with his 4th place finish in the High Jump (6'-0") and 6th place finish in the Triple Jump (42'-5"). Other athletes recording Top-5 finishes included Raymond Adams (Steeplechase), Jordan Davis (400m Hurdles), Alan Esparza (Steeplechase), and David Rosenbaum (110m Hurdles).

Hawks Open Season at Orange Coast

Costa Mesa, CA - On Friday, February 7th, the SCC track & field teams opened up their 2014 season with an Orange Empire Conference double dual meet against Saddleback and Orange Coast.

The Lady Hawks earned a split in the team competition as they defeated Saddleback College 102-to-48, but lost to Orange Coast by a score of 37-to-116.  The Lady Hawks dominated the short sprints in the meet.  Kaitlin Gishwiller and Harneet Bhullar battled to a 1-2 finish in the women's 100 Meter Dash.  Gishwiller and Bhullar also combined with Allison Padget for a 1-2-3 sweep in the women's 200 Meter Dash.

The men's team absorbed a pair of losses in the team scoring as Saddleback won by a score of 58-to-86 and Orange Coast won with a score of 3-to-151.  Top performers for the Hawks were Ryan Taylor (3rd place - Triple Jump), Ryan Figueroa (4th place – 400 Meters), and Alejandro Sanchez (4th place – 200 Meters).

Jones Earns All-American Status

 

San Mateo, CA - On Saturday, May 11th, Santiago Canyon College was represented by three student-athletes at the Southern California Regional Track & Field Championships held at Antelope Valley College. The lone qualifier for the Lady Hawks team was freshman Lindsey Meng who placed 6th in the region in the 800 Meter Run with her SCC School Record performance of 2 minutes 19.07 seconds. The SCC women's team finished the season ranked 26th in the Southern California Regional standings. The Hawks men's team qualified freshman Divonte Beale and sophomore Daniel Jones. Beale placed 7th in the region in the Triple Jump with a mark of 46 feet 6.75 inches. Jones placed 4th in the region in the Shot Put (48 feet 9.5 inches) & 6th in the region in the Discus (141 feet 7 inches). The SCC men's team finished the season ranked 20th in the Southern California Regional standings.
 
Both Lindsey Meng and Divonte Beale earned the status of 1st alternate for State Championships qualifying in their events, however Daniel Jones ended-up being the sole competitor for the SCC Hawks at this weekend's California State Track & Field Championships. The meet was held on May 17th & 18th at College of San Mateo. Jones earned All-American status by placing 4th in the Men's Shot Put with his mark of 49 feet 3 inches! Jones also placed 9th in the Men's Discus with his mark of 142 feet 11 inches. The SCC men's team finished the season ranked 29th in the State standings (in a tie with OEC rival Orange Coast College).

14 Athletes Qualify for Regionals

Santa Ana - On Friday, April 26th, the Santiago Canyon Track & Field Teams closed out their 2013 regular season by competing in the Orange Empire Conference Championships hosted at Santa Ana College.

The Lady Hawks were led by the freshmen trio of Lindsey Meng, Chloe Reeves, and Harneet Bhullar.  Meng placed 2nd in the 800 Meters with a School Record time of 2:20.83 and 4th in the Steeplechase (12:24.33).  Reeves placed 3rd in the Steeplechase with a time of 12:11.36 (2nd fastest time in school history).  Bhullar finished 6th in the 200 Meter Dash (producing a School Record time of 25.52 seconds) and 5th in the 100 Meter Dash (2nd fastest time in school history at 12.77 seconds).  The women's team defeated the Lady Dons of Santa Ana College to finish 6th in the final conference standings.

The men's team was led by the stellar field event performances of freshman jumper Divonte Beale and sophomore thrower Daniel Jones.  Beale was the 2013 Orange Empire Conference Champion in the Triple Jump with a School Record performance of 46 feet 1.5 inches.  Jones placed 2nd in the Shot Put (School Record mark of 49 feet 10.5 inches) and 4th in the Discus (140 feet 3 inches).  Other individual standouts for the Hawks included Ibrahim Al-Arnous (4th place in 100 Meter dash with a School Record time of 10.79 seconds) and Charles Harmon (4th place in the 400 Meters with a a School Record time of 48.20 seconds).  Al-Arnous and Harmon also combined with Aaron Mendez and John Siegel to produce a new School Record in the men's 4x100m Relay (42.58 seconds).  The men's team defeated the Rustlers of Golden West College to finish 5th in the final conference standings.

All combined, the Hawks men's and women's track & field teams produced 6 SCC School Records in the meet and qualified 14 student-athletes for advancement into this week's Southern California Regional meet which is being hosted at Antelope Valley College.

New School Records Set

Mission Viejo, CA - On Friday, March 22nd, the SCC Track & Field Teams competed in a double dual meet against Orange Coast College and host Saddleback College.

 

The Lady Hawks earned their first conference win of the season by defeating the Lady Gauchos of Saddleback by a score of 76-to-51.  The Lady Hawks victory was solidified by the 1st place finishes of Chloe Reeves (100 Meter Hurdles & High Jump), Lindsey Meng (800 Meters), Harneet Bhullar (Long Jump), Kimberly Torres (400 Meters), and Terra Moore (Javelin).  In their other contest, the Lady Hawks came up short against Orange Coast as the Pirates walked away with a comfortable 118-to-30 victory.  In that contest, Star Bravo and Harneet Bhullar teamed-up to lead the Lady Hawks scorers with their 1st-through-2nd place sweeps of both the 100 Meter and 200 Meter sprint events.

 

 

On the men's side, the Hawks walked away with a pair of tough losses as Orange Coast won by a score of 98-to-56 and Saddleback won by a score of 97-to-57.  However, the Hawks were able to display some truly dominant performances in the Sprint events as they placed 1st overall in the 100 Meters (Ibrahim Al-Arnous), 1st and 2nd overall in the 400 Meters (Charles Harmon & Aaron Mendez), and then swept 1st-through-3rd overall in the 200 Meters (Harmon, Mendez, and Al-Arnous racing together in that event).  They also placed 1st overall in both the 4x100 Meter and 4x400 Meter Sprint Relays – breaking the SCC School Records in both those relay events.  It was a record-setting day for freshman sprinter Charles "Chaz" Harmon as he set individual School Records in both the 200 Meters (21.66 seconds) and the 400 Meters (48.89 seconds), and also ran as the anchor leg on both the School Record relay squads!  Sophomore thrower and team captain Daniel Jones also contributed to the record-setting day as he established new School Record marks in both the Shot Put (49 feet 3.5 inches) and Hammer Throw (150 feet 6 inches).
