SCC Announces Lineup for 2012 International Film Festival

Orange—Santiago Canyon College will present three films in April as part of its annual International Film Festival, sponsored by the Languages Department.

The films are free and open to the public.

The first film in the festival is Coco Avant Chanel/Coco Before Chanel on Friday, April 13. In this 2009 drama directed by Anne Fontaine, an abandoned child grows up to revolutionize women’s fashion. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Broadcast Film Critics Association, Coco Avant Chanel is in French with English subtitles and is rated PG-13.

The festival continues with Il Postino/The Postman on Friday, April 20. In this romantic dramedy, a postman learns to love poetry while trying to win the affection of a beautiful woman. Nominated for an Academy Award, Il Postino won awards for Best Foreign Language Film at festivals in Latin America, Europe, and Japan. This 1994 film is in Italian with English subtitles and is rated PG.

The third film in the festival is El Bola/Pellet on Friday, April 27. In this drama, a 12-year-old boy lives with his authoritarian father in a poor neighborhood in Madrid. A new classmate helps the boy learn about friendship and family. El Bola won several awards in Spain and France for Best Film. This 2000 film is in Spanish with English subtitles and is Not Rated.

All three films begin at 6 p.m. in Room D-101 on the Santiago Canyon College campus, and will feature an introduction and short discussion by the Languages Department faculty. Admission and parking are free. For more information, call 714-628-4938 or 714-628-4742.
