Santiago Canyon Athletes Win Academic Honor

Orange—The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) is honoring Santiago Canyon College with the State Scholar Team award in women’s soccer for 2010-11. This is the third time SCC has won the award in the past six years.

“This is an award for the entire campus, from admissions to counseling, to financial aid, to the library,” said head coach Ian Woodhead. “The quality of faculty instruction and the support services available help facilitate the success of these, and all, students at Santiago Canyon College.”

Academic performance is important to the team’s success, according to Woodhead. More than 80 percent of the soccer players have transferred to four-year schools in the past five years. In addition, last season saw 12 alumni of the soccer team playing at four-year institutions.

The women’s soccer Hawks have appeared in the state finals four times in the past six years and ended the 2011 season second in the state. The team also notched the eighth consecutive Orange Empire Conference title for SCC.

Scholar Team Awardees will be honored at the Celebration of Scholar Athletes Luncheon, during the 15th Annual CCCAA Convention, April 4, in San Mateo.

Santiago Canyon College is a public community college of Rancho Santiago Community College District, serving the residents of Anaheim Hills, Orange, Tustin and Villa Park.  The college provides education for academic transfer and careers, courses for personal and professional development, and customized training for business and industry.
