Eric's Favorite Things

  • Besides travel, I enjoy photography (click here for some of my pictures of Indonesia, India and Carcass Island).
  • Mountain Biking. My favorites include the Brown Mountain Loop through the Arroyo Seco, Lower Brown Mountain Road, and past Owen Brown's grave site. I also ride to Mt. Lukens, Mt. Wilson (via Mt. Lowe Railway Route). The West Fork of the San Gabriel River is a great place for a quiet family ride.
  • Backpacking in the Sierra Nevada. Here is a picture of me at Thousand Island Lake between Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite. I was with my friends Alan Colville and Gary Lee.
  • Recent books I have read that you might find interesting:

William Mulholland and
the Rise of Los Angeles

William Mulholland and the Owens Valley Aqueduct bring water to a thirsty Los Angeles. Includes the heartbreak of the San Fransisquito Dam disaster.
Volcano Cowboys by Dick Thompson "The Rocky Evolution of a Dangerous Science". Includes Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Pinatubo and other volcanoes.
Mrs. Chippy by Caroline Alexander. "The Remarkable Journal of Shackleton's Polar-Bound Cat". Click on the book picture for a blow-up.
Longitude by Dava Sobel. The connection between finding longitude and the development of the modern clock escapement.
Endurance by Alfred Lansing. The best account of Ernest Shakleton's voyage to Antarctica.
Unearthing Atlantis by Charles Pellegrino. The mystery of Atlantis solved using geology, volcanology, history and archeology.
The Cradle of Life by William Schopf The history of Paleontology and the search for the first life on earth.
