AmeriCorps Learning Highways Program Goals
|
Improve the reading skills of K-6 children who are reading below grade/age appropriate level and/or who are from low-income or limited English-speaking backgrounds.
Expand educational access for college students, particularly students from those communities whose children have the greatest need for teachers and other resources to raise reading levels.
Provide resources and opportunities for under-represented students to succeed in the teacher preparation educational track.
Increase parent and community involvement in children's literacy development.
Engage volunteers in addressing various literacy-related issues in their communities.
The goal of tutoring in reading is to move low-performing or English language learners from the "learning to read" stage to the "reading to learn" stage.
