Do I have lab hours in ACE?
ACE N42, 052, 102 and 116 use classroom time in two ways: lecture time and lab time. One class session of each week is lecture time, during which the professor gives new information, reviews homework and class assignments with students, and works on other related activities. The other class session of each week is your lab time, when you will meet one-on-one with your instructor to review your writing progress and use the classroom computers to complete individualized lab tasks as well as small group or individual projects.
What will I do during my lab session?
- First, you will have an orientation to the programs at the beginning of each semester.
- After that, you will complete weekly assignments as specified in your Lab Manual.
- Assignments require you to use the classroom computer programs.
- If you don't finish everything during your lab session, you can continue working on your lab tasks in the ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER--the ASC (D-209).
How does the Academic Success Center work?
To use the ASC before or after class, you SIGN IN and SIGN OUT on the attendance computer. Then a record of your extra lab hours can be sent to your professor, who may give you extra credit for this work if specified in the instructor's course syllabus. Your lab work helps you strengthen your unique weaknesses, so it is important to maximize your use of the ASC from the beginning of the semester. Don't wait until the end!
The ASC staff are here to help you achieve your goals; in fact, several of them have learned English as a second language themselves, so they fully understand the challenges you face.
Many other programs also use the ASC, including Foreign Languages, Communication, Reading, Anthropology, and Economics. It can be a very busy room, especially at the start of each semester.
