Chafee Grant Program

The California Chafee Grant Program is for students who were in foster care and have financial need.  You may qualify for up to $5000.00 per year for career and technical training or college.  To qualify, you must be a current or former foster youth and not have reached your 22nd birthday as of July 1st of the award year.  The court must have established your dependency when you were between the ages of 16 and 18.  The California Department of Social Services will verify your foster eligibility. 

 

Chafee Grant Application Requirements

In addition to verification of qualifying foster our status, the following forms must be submitted:

    1. Chafee Grant Application must be complete – This can be done online at Chafee Home Page
    2. Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) – This can be done online at www.fafsa.ed.gov  
    3. Chafee Need Analysis Report (NAR) – to be submitted by Santiago Canyon College once your financial aid file upon completion of the students financial aid file

Additional Requirements for Chafee Grant:

 

    • Students must be enrolled in at least Half-Time (6+ Units)
    • Students must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress
    • Students must have financial need  

 

California Dream Act for Chafee Grant

Beginning 12/13 students who meet the AB-540 criteria to apply for Chafee Grant on line at www.caldreamact.org

 

Selection Criteria:

Selection Criteria for Chafee Grant awards are as follows (determined by the Chafee Program at the California Student Aid Commission):

 

    • Priority 1:   Renewal students who have received a payment in a prior year
    • Priority 2:   New students who are aging out of the program
    • Priority 3:   New students with dependents
    • Priority 4:   New students who had an unmet need of $5,000 or higher

 

All priorities are ranked in order of application submission date.
