California State University (CSU)
Santiago Canyon College and other qualified institutions can certify completion of up to 39 lower-division semester units applicable to Plan B/CSU GE-Breadth requirements or a total package of 37 semester units Breadth requirements or a total package of 37 semester units for Plan C/IGETC.
"Certification" refers to official notification from Santiago Canyon College that a student transferring to any CSU campus has completed courses fulfilling CSU lower division general education requirements. Students who are certified with 39 semester units of lower-division GE-Breadth units will not be required to complete any additional lower division general education work after transfer.
Requests for certification should be made in the Office of Admissions and Records during your last semester at Santiago Canyon College. Certification filing deadlines can be found under Admissions and Records on the SCC website. Students must have completed at least 12 units at Santiago Canyon College to request CSU certification.
CSU Certification of Plan C/IGETC
Plan C/IGETC must be completed with a C or better grade (a C- is not acceptable) in each course for the certification to be valid. If you are following the Plan C/IGETC program but you have not completed most of the courses required for Plan C/IGETC before you are ready to transfer, most of this coursework can be certified under the Plan B/CSU GE-Breadth program.
Students who are missing one or two courses under the Plan C/IGETC pattern may complete Plan C/IGETC after transfer to a CSU campus under certain circumstances. Please see an SCC counselor for further information.
University of California (UC)
All courses on the Plan C/IGETC pattern must be completed with a grade of "C" or better. The course requirements for all areas must be completed prior to transferring to the CSU or UC in order to request certification. Completion of Plan C/IGETC will allow a student to transfer from Santiago Canyon College to a campus in either the UC or CSU systems without the need after transfer, to take additional lower-division general education courses.
Plan C/IGETC is not an admissions requirement to a CSU or UC campus, and it is not the only way to satisfy lower-division general education requirements. Plan C/IGETC is not appropriate for all majors.
Completing Plan C/IGETC should be based upon the student's major, and the UC campus selected. Students are advised to consult with an SCC counselor to determine if Plan C/IGETC is the best choice to fulfill CSU or UC general education requirements.
Requests for certification of Plan C/IGETC should be made in the Office of Admissions and Records during your last semester at Santiago Canyon College. Certification filing deadlines can be found under Admissions and Records on the SCC website. A request for certification can be made at Santiago Canyon College if it is the last community college you will attend before you transfer to a CSU or UC campus.
