Cosmetology Program Basics

To earn a certificate of achievement in cosmetology, you must complete 1,600 hours of instruction (as mandated by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.) A combination of lecture and laboratory instruction includes:


·         Personal hygiene and grooming

·         Salesmanship and skills in serving the public

·         Sterilization and the principles of sanitation

·         Use of electrical appliances and principles of electricity

·         Safety requirements in the use of cosmetic materials

·         Laws and administrative regulations

·         Hairdressing, chemical waving and straightening

·         Haircutting and shampooing

·         Hair coloring, scalp and hair treatments

·         Facials

·         Manicuring

·         Operation of a beauty salon


Upon successful completion of this program, you will be ready to take the California State Board of Cosmetology written and practical exams. Once you pass the exams, you will be poised to provide services to clients in a safe, professional and satisfactory manner.

SCC also offers an associate of science in cosmetology. To earn this degree, you must complete a minimum of 60 units that include the certificate program and general education requirements with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
