Cosmetology Industry

What is the Cosmetology Industry?

The cosmetology industry never goes out of style. It’s the industry that makes people feel better about themselves by improving their looks from head to toe. Whether you want to cut & style hair, offer skin care services, or provide makeup application, you must be licensed by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology to work in this industry

Before taking the State Board exam, you must complete a set number of training hours and SCC offers a dynamic program to meet your educational needs. SCC offers an associate degree and certificate of achievement in cosmetology, and a certificate of proficiency as an esthetician. Both programs are designed to exceed minimum board standards.

All SCC classes are held at SCC’s contracted beauty school, Santa Ana Beauty Academy (SABA). SABA is located at 2231 North Tustin Avenue, Santa Ana, CA., 92705. SABA is an accredited beauty school through the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences.

What are the job prospects?

Cosmetology career options are almost unlimited and the demand is growing. According to the California Employment Development Department (EDD), by 2020, there is expected to be a 14.2 percent growth in the number of jobs in cosmetology in Orange County. In 2011, about 317,360 of the total 357,030 hair stylists nationwide worked for personal care services, which included styling salons and beauty shops. They average an annual pay of $26,550, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The best pay was in the motion picture and video industries, averaging $69,780 per year.

Many hair stylists are essentially self-employed. They work in salons where they rent a booth or chair. In that case, after they have paid the salon owner and purchased necessary supplies, the remainder of their fees is profit. They often get to set their own hours. Depending on location, price of their services, services provided, and the number of clients, they may earn as much as $100,000 per year.
