Every Fall, Santiago Canyon College host a charity fundraiser for children's cancer research and treatment. We incorporate two organizations into one event: St. Baldrick's and Be the Match. St. Baldrick's accepts donations from people who sponsor participants that shave their head in solidarity with children undergoing cancer treatment. Treatments like radiation and chemotherapy often result in hair loss for patients.
Additionally, SCC invites Be the Match to attend the event and add people to the registry of willing stem cell donors. Joining the registry is a matter of having your inner cheek swabbed, and then sending that material off to be tested for compatibility with blood cancer patients.
This event is organized and managed by the students of the Group Dynamics course. This course is offered once a year in the Fall, and is a mass lecture format. Students are placed into small groups and then tasked with important jobs like social media management, booking entertainment, and general administration. This course demonstrates that group communication skills aren't just concepts from a textbook, but are actual skills that are constantly applied in the real world. Over the last 5 years, SCC has raised over $40,000 for cancer research, and added hundreds of people to the Be the Match registry. If you want to be a part of a worthwile cause, as well as earn credit towards your degree, sign up for COMM 101 - Group Dynamics.
