What is the MaSH?
The Math Study Hall (a.k.a. MaSH) is a service provided by SCC that provides students assistance and supplement learning done in the classroom. A mathematics faculty member, an instructional assistant, or a student tutor is always on duty to assist students with questions or concerns from their math class. Additionally, computers are available for students to access mathematical software or do work for an online mathematics class. Students also have access to limited instructional videos and computer tutorial programs. There are also study rooms with whiteboards for study groups.
How do I enroll?
If you are enrolled in a math class here at SCC, then you should enroll in the corresponding lab; e.g., if you are enrolled in Math N06, then you should enroll in Math N06L; if you are enrolled in Math 140, then you should enroll in Math 140L, and so on. Please see the schedule of classes for the current section number for the lab course corresponding to your math class.
What if I am not enrolled in a math class at SCC, but still want to utilize the MaSH?
Students not enrolled in a math class at SCC, but still want to utilize the MaSH will enroll in Math N73L:
Math Review. This lab class is designed for students taking a math course elsewhere (including high school and SAC) and, yet, still want to use our study hall.
How much will it cost?
Students are charged the current per-unit enrollment fee ($9.20, currently, for the entire semester). CAP students who are less than full-time students have the unit fees waived. You may also be required to pay Student Services fees (as a part of the student application process, including health fees) and purchase a parking pass if you wish.
When is the last day to register for the MaSH?
Students may register for the MaSH any time during the semester as long as it is before the end of the 12th week of classes (or 75% of the semester for intersession classes).
How do I earn a “Pass” (P) for the MaSH Lab?
To earn a
Pass (P), students are required to complete two activities and at least 11 hours in the MaSH.
Where are the activities and how do I access them?
All activities are posted in Blackboard. To access them, click on the Canvas
link from the SCC Home page. Follow the directions for first-time users or login if you are a returning user. Click on the math lab you are enrolled in and then click on the link
MaSH Activities. You will receive periodic emails with directions along with reminding you to complete the activities.
What can I expect when I go to the MaSH?
Math faculty and math tutors are available to assist students with homework, concepts or other questions from your math class. The MaSH also offers study rooms with white boards for small groups.
What if I have used the MaSH in a previous semester, can I use it again?
Of course! As long as you are in a
different math course, you can use the lab corresponding to your course. However, if you are
repeating a math course or already enrolled in the corresponding MaSH lab from a previous semester and earned a
Pass (P), please contact the MaSH coordinator(s) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Who do I contact if I have more questions?
If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact the MaSH at email@example.com.
