Psi Beta, the Psychology Honor Society

 

Psi Beta at SCC has been deactivated until further notice. No new students will be inducted.

 

What is Psi Beta?

Psi Beta® is the national honor society in psychology for community and junior colleges. The mission of Psi Beta is professional development of psychology students through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research, and community service. Psi Beta participates with Psi Chi and other organizations at APA, APS, and regional psychology conventions.

 

 

What are the membership requirements?

  • Be enrolled at SCC and have an overall GPA of 3.25 (in a 4.0 system), and have at least a “B” average in psychology.
  • Have completed one semester of a psychology or psychology-based course and 12 semester hours total college credit.
  • Have demonstrated a genuine interest in psychology and high standards of personal behavior and integrity.
  • Have been approved by the chapter and received an emailed invitation to membership.
  • Have signed a completed membership registration card accepting Psi Beta’s bylaws and policies.
  • Have paid the once-in-a-lifetime national registration fee of $50.

The faculty advisor approves the application, and emails the student an invitation to register and pay fees to the national office. The Psi Beta inductee receives a membership certificate and card and a Psi Beta pin from the national office during the chapter induction ceremony. New members' names are published in the next Psi Beta Newsletter following the registration and ceremony. Newsletters are preserved in the Archives of the History of American Psychology in Akron, Ohio.

 

What are the membership benefits?

  • Receipt of the Psi Beta Newsletter from your chapter, while an active member.
  • Membership is for life. The registration fee is the only payment ever made to the national organization which preserves the membership records in the national office and in the Archives of the History of American Psychology and verifies memberships.
  • Tangible assets include a membership certificate, card and pin.
  • An opportunity to participate in regional and national psychological association conventions.
  • Opportunity to submit research papers and community service projects for monetary awards and national recognition.
  • Opportunity to be mentored by a member of the psychology community.
  • Eligibility for student affiliate membership in the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Psychological Society (APS).
  • After graduation or transfer, an introduction to Psi Chi chapter faculty advisors at four-year colleges and universities.
