Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Course Descriptions​

​A brief description of math courses is provided below along with links for additional information.

MATH 080: Intermediate Algebra.  Designed for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors. Has relatively rigorous coverage of topics such as graphs and functions, radicals, quadratics, polynomials, rational expressions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and conics.  Also for nursing majors who plan to transfer and get ​a BSN. Satisfies the prerequisite for Math 140 and Math 160. Satisfies the math requirement for an AA degree. Not transferable to a university.

MATH 085: Intermediate Algebra with Integrated Support.  Designed for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors. Has relatively rigorous coverage of topics such as graphs and functions, radicals, quadratics, polynomials, rational expressions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and conics.  Satisfies the prerequisite for Math 140 and Math 171. Satisfies the math requirement for an AA degree. Not transferable to a university.​ Designed for Math 080 students who need extra help in order to be successful.

MATH 171: Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry. Study of polynomial, rational, absolute value, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, their graphs and applications. Use of trigonome​​​tric properties and identities to solve equations, model real world scenarios, and manipulate expressions. Polar coordinates and complex numbers, parametric equations, and analytic geometry. An introduction to vectors, sequences, series, and limits. Preparation for the Calculus sequence.

MATH N41: Precalculus Support Course.  A review of algebraic and trigonometric topics that are needed to be successful in Precalculus.  Intended to be taken concurrently with Math 171 and is for students who did not directly place into Math 171 or for students who would like to supplement their learning with prerequisite skills.

MATH 180: Single Variable Calculus I. Limits and continuity, derivatives and integrals of algebraic, trigonometric, and other transcendental functions. Applications including extrema tests, related rates and areas. CSU and UC (CI-D) transferable.

Need Help?

Math Success Center (MSC): Students can receive homework assistance and supplement learning done at the Math Success Center in D-209.  Computers are available for students to access mathematical software or do work for an on-line math class. ​​
