Donation to Support STEM Scholarships and Model United Nations
(Orange, CA) - The Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Foundation has received a $25,000 donation from Edison International. This is the third annual grant that the college has received from Edison International. Fifteen thousand dollars of this charitable gift will support scholarships for students enrolled in the college’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs and $10,000 will sponsor SCC’s Model United Nations Program (MUN). This year, the scholarships will be directed to students in the following majors: business, computer and information services, engineering, mathematics, and physical sciences.
“Santiago Canyon College is honored and grateful to Edison International for their ongoing partnership,” said John Weispfenning, Ph.D., SCC president. “This generous support helps students in SCC’s STEM programs realize their dreams through the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Edison’s support of our Model United Nations Program helps students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and global solutions.”
Founded more than 50 years ago, Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, or other multilateral body, which projects students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation. While at SCC, MUN students research and formulate political positions based on the actual policies of the countries they represent. Then they attend conferences that address vital issues including regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights, women and children, economic and social development, and the environment. Previously, the SCC MUN team has won three national awards at Model UN conferences. The Edison grant will help defray the cost of student travel and conference participation.
“At Edison International, we are committed to supporting education,” said Tammy Tumbling, director of Philanthropy and Community Investment at Southern California Edison. “Our support focuses on providing underserved students from our communities with scholarships in the STEM fields. Last year, we contributed more than $11 million for education programs and scholarships offered through educational institutions like Santiago Canyon College, and other community based organizations, as well as through our own scholarship, the Edison Scholars Program.”
Edison International’s support of charitable causes, including the Edison Scholars Program, is funded entirely by Edison International investors, not from customers’ utility bill payments. The company’s community donations are part of its commitment as a leading corporate citizen. In addition, the children of employees of Edison International and its subsidiaries are not eligible to apply for the Edison Scholars Program.
