Cuba, Italy, and France featured in free month-long line-up
Orange - As part of its celebration of Diversity Month, Santiago Canyon College (SCC) is hosting an International Film Festival. Open to the public, the free showings will be held on the campus on three consecutive Fridays - April 18, April 25, and May 2. The films will be shown from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Building D, room 101 at Santiago Canyon College, 8045 E. Chapman Avenue in the city of Orange. Parking and refreshments are free. An introduction and discussion of each film will be provided by SCC Languages Department faculty.
Featured films include:
- Friday, April 18: L’histoire d’Adèle H./The Story of Adele H., French, 1975; French with English subtitles; not rated. A historical drama about the true life story of Adèle Hugo, daughter of French poet and novelist, and author of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame Victor Hugo, based upon her diaries. Filmed in Guernsey, Barbados, and Senegal, the film won the National Board of Review Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics Award for Best Film, and the Cartagena Film Festival Special Critics Award.
- Friday, April 25: Caterina Va In Città/Caterina in the Big City, Italy, 2003, Italian with English subtitles; not rated. A dramedy about Caterina, a 12 year-old girl from a small country town who must move to Rome where her father is transferred. The competition for Caterina’s loyalty portrays her new school as a microcosm of Italian social and political divisions under Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The film was nominated for Best Screenplay at the David di Donatello Awards in 2004.
- Friday, May 2: Lista de Espera/The Waiting List, Cuba, 2000; Spanish with English subtitles; not rated. A dramedy about a group of bus passengers who are stuck for days when their bus breaks down at a bus terminal. As they are forced to spend days together waiting for a bus, their ability to overcome their situation with generosity and solidarity is revealed. It was nominated for the Goya Award for Best Foreign Movie in Spanish in 2000.
