France, Egypt, Italy and Spain featured in free series

(Orange, CA) - As part of its celebration of Diversity Month, Santiago Canyon College’s (SCC) Languages Department is hosting an International Film Festival on three consecutive Fridays beginning April 17, April 24 and May 1. Open to the public, the showings will be held on campus at 6 p.m. in Building D, room 101 at Santiago Canyon College, 8045 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange. Parking and admission are free. An introduction and short discussion of each film will be provided by SCC Languages Department faculty. Featured films include:

• Friday, April 17: Les Aventures Extraordinaires D’Adele Blanc-Sec/The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec, France, Egypt, 2010; French and some Arabic with English subtitles, rated PG. A fantasy adventure-comedy set in the early part of the 20th century written and directed by Luc Besson, based on the Jacques Tardi’s 19th century comic books of the same name. The film follows Adele as she tries to find a cure for her sister, but before that she needs to resurrect an ancient pharaoh’s doctors, hunt down a recently revived pterodactyl and a cavalcade of other thrilling challenges with the hopes of getting back her sister. Winner of a César Award for Best Production Design in 2011, and the Audience Jury Award for Best Feature Film.
• Friday, April 24: Io Non Ho Paura/I’m Not Scared, Italy, 2003; Italian with English subtitles, rated R for language and some violence. A thriller drama based on Niccolò Ammaniti’s novel of the same name and set during Italy’s “Years of Lead,” a time in the 1970s riddled with terrorism and kidnapping. The film tells the story of a 10 year-old boy who discovers a terrible crime committed by the entire population of his small southern Italian town. Nominated for Best Film, Best Cinematography, and “Best of Youth” in 2003 to 2005.
• Friday, May 1: Celda 211/Cell 211, Spain, 2009; Spanish and Basque with English subtitles; not rated (NR) but strong language, violence, and some nudity. A prison thriller drama directed by Daniel Monzόn. A sympathetic new warden is accidentally stranded inside a prison during a preliminary tour of the premises when a riot occurs, and has to pretend to be a hard-as-nails murderer in order to survive a lynching. Winner of 22 awards, including the Goya Award for Best Spanish film.
