Santiago Canyon College Holds CSI Forensic Science Camp for Junior High Students

6/6/2014

Applications sought by June 15 deadline

Orange - Santiago Canyon College (SCC) is hosting a CSI: Forensic Science Camp from July 7-10. The four-day hands-on program will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. This unique summer program provides junior high students (grades 6-8) the opportunity to use crime scene investigation skills. Cost for four-day camp is $50.

This camp is designed for youth 11-14 years old who want hands-on experience with solving a simulated mystery case. Students will work in small teams and will learn to use compound light microscopes to look at fingerprints, hair and fibers. They will utilize thin-layer chromatography to isolate oils, agarose gel electrophoresis to separate DNA, as well as other scientific techniques. This camp will expose students to science-related careers and games to reinforce observational and memory skills.

Each classroom of 24 students will be supervised by six teaching assistants. At SCC, the camp will be led by Dr. Denise Foley, SCC associate professor of biology.

Interested students are urged to apply today as space is limited. Online applications are taken at ocbiotecheducation.org. Students are asked to write a paragraph in their own words explaining why they want to participate in the summer camp. Selection of participants is not based on a first-come first-served basis, but rather on the student-written essays. The deadline for online applications is June 15. Students selected for the SCC camp must attend an orientation at the college on Wednesday, June 18 at 6 p.m. at Santiago Canyon College, D101, 8045 E. Chapman Ave., Orange, CA 92869.

This camp is organized through the Orange County Biotech Education Partnership, a collaboration of Santiago Canyon College and Fullerton College. The program is sponsored by a grant from the California Community Colleges: Economic and Workforce Development, and from the Amgen Foundation.
