Santiago Canyon College Awards $150,000 in Student Scholarships

7/10/2014

(Orange, CA) - Thanks to the generous support of the scholarship donors, alumni, faculty and staff, the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Foundation and Scholarship Program awarded over $150,000 in student scholarships during 2013-2014. These scholarships benefited 275 continuing and transferring SCC students, as well as 23 students enrolled in the college’s Division of Continuing Education.

For the upcoming academic year (2014-2015), the SCC Scholarship Program Office received 190 scholarship applications for awards that range from $100 to $1,500. In late May, SCC presented 166 student scholarships totaling $90,950 to continuing and transferring students. In addition, 20 scholarships for students from the Division of Continuing Education were awarded totaling $3,250.

The transfer scholarship awardees are ready to begin their studies at four-year universities, including California Polytechnic University, Pomona; California State University, Fullerton; California State University, Long Beach; Chapman University; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Irvine; University of California, Los Angeles; University of California, San Diego; and University of Pennsylvania.

Among these deserving recipients is 23-year-old Matthew Montgomery, a student veteran, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2009 to 2013. Montgomery, a chemistry/mathematics major with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.78, has set his sights on becoming a chemical engineer and transferring to the University of California, Berkeley. He was happy to be awarded two scholarships - the Southern California Edison STEM Scholarship for $500 and the Morton J. Opittek Memorial Veterans Scholarship for $1,000.

“I am grateful for these scholarships right now because education is expensive. I enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment. These awards are a testament to how hard I am working,” Montgomery said.
