​FALL, SPRING, AND SUMMER CLASSES

August – December​

The Santiago Canyon College (SCC) English Language Program (ELP) is an intensive English program designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced level international (F-1) students looking to improve their English skills in preparation for study at U.S. colleges and universities.  The program is designed for students who have some knowledge of English.

The ELP is both Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)-preparatory and academically oriented and is presented in 16-week, and 8-week sessions conducted throughout the year during fall, spring and summer term. Each session consists of 20 hours of instruction per week.

International students are provided with opportunities to interact with SCC students by participating in Conversation Partners activities.  Speech workshops are provided and integrated into the ELP curriculum. 



English language instruction focuses on areas such as Grammar, listening, speaking with vocabulary development, writing and reading skills.  Students are exposed to cultural aspects of the language and its pragmatic application through participation in selected activities on campus and through various workshops.  Workshops are carefully selected based on student language proficiency.  Additionally, preparation for the TOEFL test is included in the program.

Upon completion and successful testing, students transfer to SCC credit associate degree program.

  • Experienced instructors who understand the challenges of language learning teach all Courses.
  • All courses use a variety of instructional techniques and methods.
  • All courses are student focused and emphasize practice.
  • Preparation for the TOEFL exam.

The English Language Program is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)​

ACCELERATED ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM (ELP)  

These classes are offered through a 16-week semester and an 8-week session, allowing students to complete either beginning or intermediate ESL in one semester. 

Fall Semester (16 Weeks): 

August – December

  • In a friendly, active, learner-focused environment, develop your reading, writing and grammar skills and improve your score on the TOEFL and your ability to express yourself in English.  Lots of practice guaranteed.

  • Practice your listening and speaking skills in a variety of situations and build your confidence in communicating in English with extensive practice of your listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills. 


Session (8 Weeks):

October - December

  • In this 8-week intensive active, learner-focused environment, develop your reading, writing and grammar skills and improve your score on the TOEFL and your ability to express yourself in 8 weeks.  Lots of practice guaranteed.

  •  Practice your listening and speaking skills in a variety of situations and build your confidence in communicating in English with extensive practice of your listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills.

​Spring Semester (16 Weeks): 

February – June

HOW TO GET STARTED


Apply:

Submit all the application and all required documents to the International Students Program - Email: international@sccollege.edu  or to Kanana Gitonga-  gitonga_kanana@sccollege.edu Phone: 714-628-5050.

Attend an Orientation:

A mandatory orientation will be provided. Students will gain an overview of the program and the college, as well as information regarding immigration guidelines and procedures.

Take an English Placement Test:

Students will take an assessment test for placement into the appropriate cohort to optimize their success. The placement test will be given during the Orientation and will take up to two hours to complete.

Register:

Students will be enrolled into ELP according to placement test results. Students can obtain assistance in the International Student Office, SCC, A-203.
