Santiago Canyon College Awards Over $190,000 in Donor-Supported Scholarships

Applications accepted for 2017-18 academic year scholarships available in January 2017
Thanks to the support of the community, alumni, faculty and staff, the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Foundation and Scholarship Program awarded over $190,000 in donor-supported scholarships during the 2015-2016 school year. The scholarships benefited 165 continuing and transfer students, as well as 16 non-credit students.

On May 19, 2016 the 17th annual scholarship ceremony was held at the college’s Strenger Plaza, where 178 scholarships totaling $100,000 were awarded to continuing and transferring students. In addition, nine students from the Division of Continuing Education were awarded scholarships totaling $3,200.

Students who received transfer scholarships are planning to attend a variety of four-year universities, including California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Fullerton; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Irvine; University of Oregon; and Chapman University.

Among the scholarship recipients is 18-year-old Omar Mosqueda. He is a computer science major with a 3.1 GPA who plans on transferring to a four-year university in two years. Computers have interested him since middle school. Seeing how computers could impact the future led him towards computer science as his future.

"A moment that changed me was, when I saw that there was so much help in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) field at SCC. It really solidified my choice to pursue a STEM major" said Mosqueda.

Mosqueda was pleased to receive two scholarships totaling $1,000. He was awarded a $500 STEM scholarship from Southern California Edison and the Wanda Wright Memorial Scholarship for $500.
SCC offers a wide range of scholarships presented at different times throughout the academic year.

They include:

  • Buy-the-Book Scholarships, funded by the Community Foundation of Orange and the SCC Foundation, are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis during the first two days of the fall and spring semesters. Students are eligible if they have a 2.0 GPA and are not receiving any other grants or scholarships. The scholarship is only to be used for books at the SCC Hawk bookstore.
  • Freshmen Scholarships are for incoming students enrolled in at least 9 units. Applications are available from September until October and funds are disbursed in December.
  • Veterans’ Scholarships applications are available to veteran students who attend the Veteran Service Offices (VSO) orientation in the fall and the spring.
