Who is eligible to participate in the 2023 Commencement Ceremony?

Students who have ​​submitted a Petition to Graduate​ for a degree (AA/AS/AA-T/AS-T) in the Class of 2022 and 2023 

  • Class of 2022 - Summer 2022
  • Class of 2023 - Fall 2022, Spring 2023, or Summer 2023

Students who have ​​petitioned to earn a Certificate of Achievement or Proficiency are not eligible.

Do we need to register to attend?  Is there a registration deadline?

What if I didn't receive ​an email?  Will I still be able to participate?

Will graduates be given instructions?

Will graduates go on the stage to receive their diplomas?

Yes, graduates will be walking on stage to receive their padded diploma cover. 

Whom should I contact regarding a guest or graduate who may require special accommodations?

Contact the Office of Student Development at (714) 628-4732 or commencement@sccollege.edu​ and special accommodations will be reviewed based on need.

Will we be allowed to bring guests?

Are tickets required for guests?

Will we be sitting with our guests?

No. Graduates will be seated in the student section. Guests will be sitting in a separate guest section. 

May I bring ​​​​balloons?

What is the academic attire to participate in the ceremony?

Cap and gown must both be black, or you will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.  All graduates must wear approved academic attire.

Can I decorate my graduation cap (motarboard)?

Yes.  If you choose to decorate your cap, please do so in compliance with the Student Code of C​​onduct.  No expression that is obscene or inappropriate will be allowed (BP5500​).  Any violation of this policy may cause you to be removed from participating in the ceremony.​

May I wear heels?​​​​​​​

Please wear appropriate shoes.  High heels are discouraged.

How can I purchase a cap, gown, tassel, shash, or other graduation merchandise?

Please visit the Hawk Bookstore​ website.

  • Cap, gown, tassels, and other graduation regalia can be purchased from the SCC Hawk Bookstore.
  • The cost is $39.99 plus tax (free shipping), including ​a cap, gown, and tassel.
  • Cash, check​, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express are accepted. Credit cardholders must be present at the time of purchase.

Will I receive my diploma at Commencement?

Unfortunately, diplomas will not be given at the Commencement ceremony.  Instead, graduates will receive a padded diploma cover with no inserts.  Diplomas will be mailed out a few months after the semester for which you are petitioning ends.  Please make sure your mailing address is up-to-date in Self-Service to ensure the arrival of your diploma.

Do I qualify for academic honors?

Students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in all coursework, including courses transferred from another institution, as of Fall 2021 will qualify for the following honors:

  • 3.5 to 3.79 - With Honors​
  • 3.80 to 3.99 - With High Honors
  • 4.0 - With Highest Honors

If you qualify for Academic Honors​, we will swap out your tassel for a gold tassel when you check in for the Commencement Ceremony.
