Liliana Kumar

Student Success Story: Liliana Kumar

When the COVID-19 pandemic closed the salon where Liliana Kumar had worked as a cosmetologist for 10 years, she was faced with an unexpected career change. Rather than seeing it as a setback, she embraced it as an opportunity to build a new future. "I was looking to begin a new career path," she shared. During her search, she discovered Santiago Canyon College's Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and decided to begin her healthcare journey in 2025.

Like many adult learners, returning to school came with challenges. As the mother of a toddler, Liliana balanced classes, studying, and clinical training while managing the responsibilities of work and family life. There were moments when she said, "I felt I couldn't do it," and she shared that "some exams were difficult." Despite the obstacles, she remained committed to her goal. "I didn't give up," she said.

Her perseverance paid off. After successfully completing the Nursing Assistant program, Liliana became eligible to take California's Nurse Assistant certification exam and earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license. For Liliana, becoming a CNA was more than earning a certificate; it was the first step toward a long-term career in healthcare. Today, she is employed as a CNA, where the hands-on experience she gains while caring for patients continues to strengthen her skills, build her confidence, and prepare her for the next stage of her journey toward becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).

For many students, the Nursing Assistant program provides a direct pathway into the healthcare workforce. Graduates gain the foundational knowledge and clinical experience needed to begin working in healthcare settings. The experience they gain as CNAs also prepares them to pursue additional education, opening doors to careers such as Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Registered Nurse (RN), and many other healthcare professions that offer increased responsibilities, higher earning potential, and expanded career opportunities.

While she is proud of her educational accomplishments, Liliana says the most rewarding part of her career is caring for others. Liliana shares, “I love working and helping others. That's my gratification." She knew she had chosen the right profession when patients began thanking her for the compassionate care she provided. Those simple words of appreciation remind her that she is making a meaningful difference every day.

Liliana also credits the people who supported her along the way. "Mrs. Robbie Touch is an excellent teacher," she said. "The team at Santiago Canyon College is helpful and encouraging." The guidance and encouragement she received helped her stay motivated through every challenge and continue moving toward her goals.

Liliana's story is a powerful reminder that life's unexpected turns can become opportunities for growth. What began as the loss of a longtime career became the start of a new purpose; one centered on serving others and building a future in healthcare. Through determination, hard work, and the support of Santiago Canyon College, she transformed uncertainty into success.
