Careers Without Boundaries: Survey/Mapping Sciences @ SCC

From plane tables and parchment to drones and databases, there's no doubt that the mapping industry has evolved. And with construction and resource extraction projects continuing to expand worldwide, demand for confident land survey professionals has followed suit.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in this field are increasing at a faster-than-average rate (11-percent), with the average full-time employee earning more than $60,000* annually. Santiago Canyon College's award-winning Surveying program prepares students with the background knowledge, practical skills, and technical expertise required in this evergreen industry.

After setting a foundation with the introductory Plane Surveying course, Survey/Mapping students delve into high-tech aspects such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and Legal Aspects of Surveying.

Both the degree and certificate in Survey/Mapping Sciences provide a basis for employment in the engineering, surveying, architectural, and utility industries, in a wide variety of hands-on careers. In 2017, SCC's Survey/Mapping program earned a Surveying Education Award from the National Council of Examiners for Engineers (NCEES). A year later, SCC's Surveying Apprenticeship program picked up a Strong Workforce Silver Star from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, for excellence in employment and wage attainment outcomes.
