Santiago Canyon College (SCC) has launched a women’s flag football team, beginning its first season in spring. The program highlights SCC’s commitment to expanding athletics, supporting student-athletes, and engaging the community.

The team will be led by Kristen Sherman, a nationally recognized coach who built Orange Lutheran High School’s championship-winning program and was named CIF Southern Section Coach of the Year. Sherman also coached in the NFL Flag High School Girls Showcase at the 2025 Pro Bowl, underscoring her reputation as a top leader in the sport.

Flag football is growing rapidly, with millions of participants worldwide and upcoming inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. At SCC, the team will compete in the Orange Empire Conference alongside local colleges such as Irvine Valley, Saddleback, and Santa Ana.

The sport is valued for its accessibility and the opportunities it creates for female athletes. SCC leaders see it as a way to build community while growing a new athletic tradition. While starting from scratch brings challenges, Sherman and SCC staff are focused on building a strong foundation, fostering belonging, and prioritizing student success both on and off the field.
