Apprenticeship: Electrician

Program Information

The Industrial Option is for Inside Wiremen.  They install conduit, electrical wiring, fixtures and electrical apparatus inside commercial buildings and in a multitude of industrial settings. They use many different kinds of tools, ranging from simple one and two-hand tools (such as wire cutters, screwdrivers, and cable-cutters) to power-assisted tools like electric drills and cable pullers. The trade requires physical effort on the part of the Apprentice to do climbing, crawling, crouching, and working in cramped quarters.  Depending on the job, the work may be performed either indoors or outdoors; however, the major portion of duties are indoors or in semi-shelter or unfinished buildings. The Apprentice shall be under the constant supervision of a journeyworker Electrician at all times during training.

The Sound and Communication Option is for Sound Installers, who are often referred to as sound technicians, installers, and system designers. They often work on audio, video, multimedia, and home and corporate entertainment systems;  telephone, fax, modem, Internet, local area networks, paging, intercoms, and public address systems; and various forms of home and building security, control, and automation systems.

Sound Installer are responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of permanently installed systems, as opposed to portable systems. Their work generally focuses on the distribution of low-voltage signals among microprocessor-based devices and controls. Their duties generally include installing, connecting, calibrating, and servicing products that move voice, video, audio, and data signals, and products that control mechanical and electrical apparatuses.

The Orange County Electrical Apprenticeship program is a State registered program dedicated to the training of electrical construction Apprentices.  The Inside Wireman program requires five years to complete (10 semesters of night time instruction) and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training as an indentured apprentice. The Sound Installer program requires three years to complete (6 semesters of night time instruction) and 4,800 hours of on-the-job training as an indentured apprentice. College credit is earned for the classroom related and supplemental instruction.

Successful completion of the apprenticeship program (1) leads to journeyworker status with the State of California, (2) satisfies major requirements for an associate degree through Santiago Canyon College, and (3) satisfies requirements for a Certificate of Achievement through Santiago Canyon College.
 

Application Information

All applicants must:

1. Be 18 years of age at the time of application.
2. Present High School Diploma or equivalent.
3. Deliver a copy of transcript grades.
4. Have successfully completed one year of High School Algebra I or equivalent with a grade of "C" or better.
5. Demonstrate fluency in the English language.

Applicants selected for employment will be subject to drug screening prior to acceptance.  Applicants testing positive for any controlled substance will not be accepted for training.

The selection of Apprentices will be made on the basis of qualification alone, without any regard to race, creed, color, sex, or national origin.
