Articulation Office
What is Articulation?
Articulation bridges community colleges and four-year institutions, ensuring smooth student transfers. It involves reviewing community college courses to identify those equivalent to university courses. This process enables students to meet specific university entrance, major, or general education requirements while remaining at their community college, preventing delays or repeat coursework after transferring. Articulated courses may apply directly to a student’s major requirements, general education requirements, or sometimes only as elective credit. Even when a course transfers as an elective, the credit can still count toward the total units required for graduation at the receiving institution.
Santiago Canyon College maintains articulation agreements with many universities, including campuses within the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems, as well as private and out-of-state institutions. These agreements outline how courses transfer between schools and help students plan their academic pathway more effectively.
Successful transfer planning involves creating a Student Education Plan (SEP) that includes completing the appropriate articulated courses for both major preparation and general education. Students are encouraged to work with academic counselors or transfer centers to ensure they are selecting the right courses and staying on track for a timely and efficient transfer to a four-year university.

It is strongly advised that students meet with an SCC counselor, as the course credit and units granted for local SCC Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees may differ from those granted by a transfer institution. Credit granted for AP, CLEP, or IB cannot be used to meet Santiago Canyon College's 12-unit residency requirement for Associate degrees. It is recommended that students not enroll in a college course comparable to the AP Exam, as credit limitations may apply from SCC, CSU, and/or a UC campus.

Outstanding Independent Colleges and Universities
In addition to state supported colleges and universities in California, there are many outstanding independent colleges and universities in our state and throughout the country. Santiago Canyon College students can be eligible to transfer to many of these institutions. Each college or university has its own admission requirements. To determine eligibility, students should obtain a copy of the transfer university's catalog and consult with an SCC counselor. Santiago Canyon maintains articulation agreements with many local universities. For information on specific articulation agreements, please make an appointment with an SCC counselor or visit the SCC Transfer Center.
Many private/independent universities give credit for general education courses taken at Santiago Canyon College and for courses designed for transfer to the University of California. Completion of IGETC/Plan B or Cal-GETC/Plan 2 will meet general education requirements for many universities. Private/independent university catalogs can be viewed online and in the SCC Transfer Center.
