Submitting your university application is a huge milestone, but there are still a few important steps to complete before you transfer. Follow the checklist below to stay on track and avoid delays/issues in your university admission or enrollment.

After submitting your application, universities will send you instructions to create or access your applicant portal. This is particularly common for the CSU campuses. These campus-specific portals are where universities communicate important updates.

In your portal, you can:

  • Track your application status
  • See if documents are missing
  • Receive admission decisions
  • Complete required next steps

Tip: Check your portals regularly and use the same email address you used on your application.

At the time you applied, you listed in-progress and planned classes. You will go back into the transfer application websites and update the grades for your in-progress classes. If changes have occurred for your planned spring classes, you can update this as well.

  • UC Application: Transfer Academic Update
  • Cal State Apply

Some universities and majors require a supplemental application after you submit your transfer application. For example, CSULB requires a supplemental application for all transfer applicants, and competitive majors such as nursing may have additional program applications.

Instructions and deadlines will be posted in your applicant portal and/or sent to you via email. Be sure to check regularly, as missing a supplemental application deadline may affect your admission to the campus or major.

Many universities will request additional documents after you apply. Common requests include:

  • Official college transcripts from all colleges attended
    • Send separately from each college you took classes at. Don’t forget dual enrollment or online classes taken outside of SCC. SCC uses a platform called Parchment for official transcript requests.
  • AP, IB, or CLEP exam scores sent via College Board
  • Verification forms
  • Financial aid documents

Deadlines vary by campus, so check your portal carefully.

If you are earning an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) or other degree from SCC, you must submit a Graduation Petition. This allows SCC to:

  • Verify that you are on track for the degree listed on your CSU application
  • Receive your degree and/or GE certification

Complete next year’s financial aid application by the March 2nd priority deadline. List all colleges that you applied to. Students should submit either:

  • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
  • California Dream Act Application

You should also:

  • Check your financial aid portals
  • Respond to any requests from the universities for documents
  • Apply for SCC scholarships

Fall admission decisions are typically released:

  • UC: March to April
  • CSU: February to April
  • Private universities: Varies by school

Be sure to check your email and applicant portals frequently. Once admitted, you will need to accept your offer of admission by the campus deadline (May 1 for CSUs, and June 1 for UCs). When you accept your offer, you will also pay an enrollment deposit.

After completing your final semester, universities will require official final transcripts showing:

  • All completed coursework
  • Degree posted (if applicable)

After accepting admission, universities will guide you through additional steps such as:

  • Transfer orientation
  • Advising and course registration
  • Placement or assessment requirements
  • Housing applications

Completing these steps early helps ensure you can register for the classes you need.

Private schools and out of state schools do not adhere to the same requirements and timelines as the UC or CSU systems. Each school has its own transfer process. Visit Room D-104 if you have a specific private or out of state campus that you want to apply to.
