Mission

The mission of the Technology Innovations and Distance Education subcommittee (TIDE) is to make recommendations to the Curriculum and Instruction Council. These recommendations will aim to enhance the quality of education at Santiago Canyon College through the effective use of instructional technologies and effective online learning pedagogies, while promoting and improving social and student equity. We evaluate and recommend innovative technologies, provide guidance and expertise, make recommendations for professional development opportunities, and work to identify and implement best practices for technology-enhanced instruction and online learning, based on evidence-based research and pedagogical principles.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate evolving trends in distance education and construct recommendations for integrating effective practices into standards, policies, and/or procedures.
  • Evaluate the Distance Education program’s effectiveness and make recommendations for improvement. The effectiveness of the program will include student success, student retention, the continued improvement and promotion of student and cultural equity, and the outreach and extended availability of our programs and services.
  • Make recommendations for marketing and promoting Distance Education.
  • Review and make recommendations for online degree pathways.
  • Review and make recommendations for OER and ZTC pathways.
  • Review and evaluate Distance Education Addendums and provide feedback and suggestions to faculty before submission to the Curriculum and Instruction Council for approval.
  • Review and revise expected learning outcomes for the online teaching certificate program.
  • Recommend technologies and practices that lead to an effective online teaching community.
  • Evaluate Instructional Technologies and make recommendations for their procurement and effective use.
  • Review and make recommendations on state and local DE initiatives and grants.

 

Membership

The faculty Distance Education Coordinator and Vice President, Academic Affairs or designee will serve as co-chairs. Faculty DEC members will be selected to adequately represent the faculty at large. Membership will include the following members:

  • Distance Education Coordinator (Co-Chair)
  • Vice President, Academic Affairs or designee (Co-Chair)
  • 1 Faculty member from each Division (6)
  • 1 At-large Faculty member
  • 1 Director of Student Information Support
  • 1 Classified representative (Student Services)
  • 1 Student representative
