Maintaining F-1 Status
The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) regulations governing F-1 students and schools can be found here: https://www.ice.gov/sevis/schools/reg
Our office intends to ensure your success at SCC by implementing program policies and procedures that follow these regulations.
Responsibilities of F-1 Students
- Enroll in a Full Course of Study.
- Read “Enrollment Requirements” for details on F-1 student enrollment.
- Change of Major
- If you have updated your major, please request an updated I-20 from the International Student Office. You must report the change of major within 10 days.
- Keep Your Contact Information Current
- If you move to a new address, you must update it on Self-Service and inform the International Student Office within 10 days of moving. This includes any contact information changes, such as email, phone number, and address.
- Change of Status
- If you are approved for a change of status while studying as an F-1 student, you may request to have your SEVIS record terminated due to “Change of Status Approved”. Please report this to your Designated School Official and they can close out your SEVIS record appropriately.
- Program Extension
- If you are unable to complete your studies before the program completion date listed on your Form I-20, you must apply for an extension at least 30 days prior to the expiration date of your I-20 and receive authorization from your Designated School Official. The request must be made and processed before your I-20 program end date expires.
- Transferring to Another School
- If you would like to transfer to another school, you must submit a SEVIS Transfer Request; please include the acceptance letter from your prospective school. Transfers must be completed before your 60-day grace period ends and the start date of your new program must begin within 5 months of your last day of attendance at SCC.
- Travel
- To re-enter the U.S., you may be asked to present the following documents to the immigration
service officer:
- Current passport valid for at least 6 months after the reentry date
- Valid F-1 visa
- Valid I-20 with valid travel signature on page 2 (travel signatures valid for 1 year, travel signatures while on OPT valid for 6 months)
- Proof of financial support showing funds to cover tuition and/or living expenses
- Evidence of attendance such as an acceptance letter, transcript, or recent tuition payment receipt
- Proof of paying the I-901 SEVIS fee (which you can print from https://www.fmjfee.com/i901fee/index.html)
- It is recommended that you have these documents readily available and hand-carry them. Take the time to print these documents, so you do not have to pull up the documents on your phone or electronic device.
- Email international@sccollege.edu or visit A-203 to request for a travel signature. If you have a printout of your Form I-20, bring it with you when coming to the office.
- To re-enter the U.S., you may be asked to present the following documents to the immigration
service officer:
- Withdrawing from SCC
- If you need to stop studying prior to graduating from SCC, you may request an Authorized Early Withdrawal. This can be a temporary leave of absence or complete withdrawal from the school. Contact your DSO in the International Student Office for assistance.

Enrollment Requirements
All international students with an I-20 must maintain a full-course load each spring and fall semester.
- Enroll and complete 12 units each fall and spring semester.
- New students starting in summer, must enroll and complete a minimum of 6 units.
- Intersession and Summer sessions are optional for continuing students.
- W’s (withdrawals) do not count towards a student’s full-time status.
- Only one online class, up to 3 units, can count towards a student’s F-1 status.
- Students needing less than 12 units in their last semester may request approval for a Reduced Course Load.
Immigration Documents
As an F-1 international student, it is your responsibility to make sure that you have current immigration documents. Please keep a copy of all your documents in a safe place.
Passport
You must keep a valid passport. U.S. immigration regulations state that your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months into the future. Most countries allow you to renew your passport in the U.S. while others require you to return to your home country to process a renewal. You will not be able to re-enter the U.S. without a valid passport.
Visa
A valid F-1 student visa is necessary to enter the United States. Students can continue to use an F-1 visa along with their valid Form I-20 to re-enter the United States. If it is expired, you must reapply for a new visa only if you plan to travel abroad and re-enter the U.S. It is not necessary to extend your visa if you are not planning to travel and re-enter the United States.
I-94
Your most recent I-94 and travel history can be found here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/
When you enter the US, you should receive an updated I-94, please review it for accuracy. If there are any errors on your I-94, contact your local CBP Deferred Inspection Office or Port of Entry (POE) or visit our office to request information on how to correct your I-94.
Make sure that your I-94 record reflects “D/S” and “F-1” status.
Form I-20
It is your responsibility to ensure that your I-20 is valid and up to date. This document allows you to continue studying in the United States until you complete your program (see "program end date" section of your I-20).
If there is information on your I-20 that changes (e.g. your name, your major, etc.) you must report the change to our office within 10 days.
Failing to Maintain Status
When a student does not follow F-1 regulations, they are considered out-of-status and a consequence of falling out-of-status is to have their Form I-20 “terminated”. A terminated Form I-20 indicates that the student is not eligible to continue their studies, and the student must take steps to regain their F-1 status.
There are two ways an international student can regain their F-1 status: filing a USCIS I-539 application for reinstatement or by departing and re-entering the United States using a new Form I-20 (re-entry). There are risks and benefits with both options. Please contact your DSO.
